The woodworker mapping a coastline one shaving at a time

The woodworker mapping a coastline one shaving at a time

On a salt-weathered bench above the tide, Arthur Haines turns driftwood into small, useful maps.

Words by Ren Lewis · Photographs by Elise M. Brooks

Misty cliffs beside the Atlantic Ocean

Arthur Haines reads a piece of driftwood the way another person might read a chart. Knots become headlands; pale grain becomes the path of a river. His workshop is small, salt-stained, and open by appointment.

TRAVELLER’S FIELD GUIDE

What should travellers know?

Arrange a studio visit before travelling and allow time for the coastal trail at low tide. The region works well as a two-day trip: one day for the workshop and village, another for a guided walk on the tidal flats.
